As a P.R. consultant, Sandra always traveled prepared for unexpected social occasions. The black strappy dress she’d packed for Talladega would take her anywhere from a barbecue to, in a pinch, a ball. Or to dinner with Taney.

She was quite satisfied with her appearance when she looked in the mirror. And going by the flare of green heat in Taney’s eyes, he was happy, too, though all he said was a mild, “Looks like that whole nun thing has changed since I last went to church.”

Then he took her arm with a firmness that spoke of possession.

Sandra couldn’t identify any other NASCAR people at the restaurant Taney had chosen. But then, teams and drivers didn’t usually veer to the candlelit-table, leather-bound-menu end of the restaurant scale.

Taney sat back, entirely relaxed in the plush surroundings. His eyes ran over her face, her shoulders, lingered on her cleavage. He smiled. And her skin burned as if he’d reached across and touched her.

The waiter served bread, took their orders, then poured the champagne Taney had requested.

Sandra eased back into her seat and marveled that she felt so relaxed with him—and not just because of the champagne bubbles working their way gently into her bloodstream. A few weeks ago she’d been always on edge in his presence. The edge hadn’t gone away, but it felt…different.

It feels way too good.

Which didn’t make sense, because, outside of work, she and Taney were almost strangers. If Danielle hadn’t run away from home, Sandra still wouldn’t know he had a brother, or that his parents had died. The man opposite her was an uncharted continent of history, opinions, thoughts and emotions. She wanted to explore.

Of course, she hadn’t told him much about herself, but that was because she didn’t want him to figure out her business was in trouble. Taney hadn’t asked about her family, she realized. It would have been logical when they’d discussed his background, but he hadn’t said a word.

Maybe he’s not interested. The thought alarmed her, alerted her to the fact that she felt more for him than she’d admitted to herself. Surely it couldn’t all be one-sided?

“Taney,” she said, “since this is our first date, is there anything you’d like to know about me?”

He scrutinized her face, a half smile on his lips. “As a matter of fact, there is.”

He is interested, she told herself, relieved. He just hasn ‘t had a chance to ask.

He leaned forward across the table, caught her hand in his. “I can’t stop wondering,” he said, “what you look like naked.”

Sandra gave a little squawk of shock and tried to tug her hand back. But he held fast.

“I think I have a pretty good picture,” he reflected, “but I can’t be sure.”

Her whole body was one giant blush. “That’s not what I meant,” she chided. “I meant about my family, my background.”

He shrugged. “Why don’t you tell me about your parents?”

He didn’t sound as if he really wanted to know, and alarm pricked Sandra. She wanted to know what made Taney tick.
